When people visit your site they should have a reason to stick around for a while. How long they stay will probably be based on the content or the service that your site offers. However, other factors can also influence a users decision to leave and one of these is the way they are redirected to outgoing links.
Setting the "target" for all outgoing links to "_blank" means that when a user clicks a link that redirects to a site other than your own, that site will open up either in a new tab or a new window. This is obviously much better than the new site loading over your own. However, rembering to set this attribute when you are writing articles or adding links to forums can prove to be an unecessary hassle. While creating this site I decided to look for an automated solution and I found one in the mfBlank plugin from marcofolio.net. This neat little extension checks whether a link is outgoing and if it is, automatically adds the "target=_blank" attribute! It's a great time saver and a good way to ensure that you don't disrupt the user journey through your site.
